From the Experts: The Benefits of Motion
Dr. Larry Shultz:
Numerous studies have demonstrated the importance of
movement to many aspects of human development and behavior. From the time
of conception, the developmental process takes place in a fluid medium
where movement occurs in a gentle flowing manner. During this process,
special receptors are developed that are specifically designed to sense
changes in motion. These receptors are located throughout the body and
they continuously send (and receive) signals to the brain that provide
necessary information that enables us to function properly. The gentle
wave-like motion of motion therapy systems provides natural stimulation to
these receptors and consequently provides an efficient form of
neurological ‘exercise’ for the nervous systems.
Frank Belgau, Ed.D.
Since the 1960’s, NASA has supported and funded some of
the basic scientific research that has attempted to understand how the
sense of balance, or vestibular system, operates, and how balance effects
brain processing and sensory integration. This research has changed our
understanding of how the brain works. It has shown that activities that
involve movement and balance can have a significant effect on visual
processing, reading and learning efficiency, athletic and academic
performance.

author in Education Eric Jenson
An exciting and long overdue field of study that is
emerging in education is the importance of movement and motion to
learning. Learning and movement pioneer Eric Jenson writes, “Once
considered “extra-curricular,” research now suggests that movement
activities are integral to the learning process.
Sharon Heller, Ph.D.
The body wants to rock, begging for vestibular input...as
youngsters we get lots of vestibular input: we swing, jump on trampolines,
roller blade, dive into water….this keeps our vestibular apparatus
oiled. As we age...we “get by” with using it less and less. But the
more vestibular input, the better any nervous system functions, especially
one that is starved.
Michael Hutchinson
Another technique for supercharging the brain is physical
movement….From the time of our conception, movement is an essential
nutrient: without it, the brain does not develop fully. As babies we are
rocked; as kids we roll down hills and spin until we are dizzy; as adults
we scuba dive, skydive, drive fast around turns, dance , and when tired
sit in rocking chairs. This movement is not only pleasurable, but it
stimulates our body and nervous system. Like light and sound, motion is a
nutrient for the brain and body, and if we consistently fall short of
meeting our minimum daily requirement, we become susceptible to chronic
health problems.
Paul E. Dennison, Ph.D.
Movement is life. It is the door to learning. If learning
is defined as “changed behavior, “ I submit that no learning can take
place without movement.
Carla Hanaford, Ph.D. The more closely we consider the elaborate interplay of
brain and body, the more clearly one compelling theme emerges: movement is
essential to learning.
Julian B. Metter, Ph.D.
Movement is a powerful component in human learning.
Movement engages more of the brain’s resources and allows information
about the outside world to be processed on a deeper level. Smooth rhythmic
motion also activates old patterns in the human brain associated with
safety and comfort.
Carla Hannaford, Ph.D.
Physical movement, from the earliest infancy and
throughout our lives, plays an important role in the creation of nerve
cell networks which are actually the essence of learning….movement
activates the neural wiring throughout the body, making the whole body the
instrument of learning….most important …is to include more movement in
your life, particularly integrative movements requiring balance and
coordination that assist nervous system development and functioning.
Bonnie Gintis, D.O. Exploring the benefits of movement reminds us of our
capacity for change, healing, creativity, and innovation. Through
movement, sound and breath we engage in a practice based on a philosophy,
a deep respect and trust in the self-correction mechanism of our organism,
a way of considering and appreciating life, and a context for growth,
development and healing.
Integrative Motion: A foundation for wellness
Ann Burton, Ph.D.
I can’t think of anyone who can not benefit from
these sensory integration systems. The uses and benefits in clinical
settings and organizations are unlimited. Using motion as a foundation
enhances any other therapy you blend it with.
I have had a Symmetron for over five years and love it. I have seen
clients reach states of relaxation, in one session, that have stayed with
them. Teaching clients to engage the relaxation response is indispensable
for optimal health, learning and well-being. Many of the problems
we have identified as behavioral or psychological in nature are in truth
problems with sensory integration and brain organization. These systems
work by stimulating, through motion, areas of the brain that talk
therapies just don’t reach. The benefits of sensory integration through
motion are powerful.
Before the
invention of the Chi Sport the proprietary motion of Integrative
Motion Systems was used almost exclusively in clinical settings. Dr.
Shultz and Integrative Motion Systems wanted to create a system that could
be used in the home by everyone in the family. The Chi Sport fulfills
that need. It is fun, effective, affordable, portable and enhances human
potential. The first time I used the Chi Sport I knew it was
special. I have it in my home, next to my compurter and use it several times throughout the day.
It is a stress reducer and creativity booster in less than ten minutes.
I envision a group
of pioneers who have experienced first hand the power of sensory
integration through motion working together, sharing and charting new
territory for optimal wellness and well-being. Sensory integration through
motion is new territory with exciting possibilities! If you, like me,
believe something wonderful is about to happen I invite you to join this
group of pioneers charting new territory for optimal wellness.
From
Sherry:
"Before
my session on the Symmetron (NeuroWave) Integrative Motion System (the Chair) I
found it difficult to get into deep meditative states and feel
relaxed. Even in group meditation settings I did not feel the level
of energy or relaxation that I did once I tried the Chair.
With the Chair I found that I could find my center, relax and go
into deeper states of consciousness than ever before. Now I am able
to move into deep meditative states very easily even in public
situations. I am able to feel the energy moving around me and
through me as I never did before. And, I am able to do this very
easily and almost instantaneously. I would have never thought it
possible. I tried for many years to find that deep meditative space
through conventional meditative teachings and practices. The Chair
took me quantumly to an energy and consciousness level that I never
thought I could reach or was possible. Thank you Ann for working
with me and for the sessions on the Chair that have
forever changed my life."
